The M1 is a multi-pedal that packs a wide range of modulation effects into a compact body that allows for detailed settings. It comes with six customizable studio-quality programs: "Chorus," "Phaser," "Tremolo," "Vibrato," "Rotary," and "Filter." It provides high-performance modulation effects that are suitable for any genre or style, from delicate modulation to dynamic, thick, undulating chorus and bold panning tremolo.

PROGRAM

・ Chorus
The tri chorus, which ranges from subtle to gorgeous, will instantly transport you to the 80s.
Type 1 Traditional Chorus has a tight and smooth chorus tone.
Type 2 adds offset rate and depth to the mix, and because of its structure, two choruses can be used to create a more dramatic sound.
Type 3 has its roots in the classic Tri Chorus effect, using three choruses to create a multi-dimensional, luxurious chorus effect.

・ Phaser
It combines the classic 70s phaser sound we all know and love with some unexpected features.
Type 1 is a two-stage phaser with one classic, mild notch.
Type 2 is a four-stage model with two notches of stronger effect.
Type 3 is a phaser that models the unique tuning and LFO waveforms found in the Uni Vibe.

・TREMORO
Tremolo emulating three different algorithms with bells, whistles and extras.
Type 1 is close to Monument's standard mode, with great traditional sound created by full-range optical and bias tremolo.
Type 2 is a warm and pleasant harmonic tremolo similar to the Monument's harmonic mode. This unique sound is created by raising and lowering the high and low ranges in relation to each other.
Type 3 is a pulsating tremolo synced to the rhythm of several pre-determined patterns.

・Vibrato
Type 1 specializes in traditional vibrato sounds.
Type 2 has a digital sound that mimics the sound of an old record player (you'll find the classic RPM in the Rate knob, along with the noise that will remind you of your parents' old Speedwagon LPs). The Rate knob lets you choose between 33RPM, 45RPM, and up to 78RPM.
Type 3 is a modern take on the wow and flutter sound of old tape recorders. It's warm and somewhat nostalgic.

・Rotary
Large rotary speakers like Leslie speakers don't fit on a pedal board.
Type 1 is a simulation of a wet, oil-filled Leslie speaker.
Type 2 is an effect in which only the horn rotor (high pitch section) rotates, and sound is produced from both the drum rotor and low pitch section.
Type 3 reproduces the effect of only rotating the bass section of the drum rotor and the horn rotor (treble horn rotor).

・ Filter
Use a variety of modulation filters to add tone-shaping movement to your signal.
Type 1 is a low pass filter suitable for modulated dark tones.
Type 2 is a high pass filter used to creatively modulate low frequencies.
Type 3 is a bandpass filter that forms a sliding "window" of frequencies.
Drive the filter frequency with the main LFO, or set the depth to zero and turn up the LO FI envelope control to drive the filter frequency with your playing dynamics.

PRESETS

The M1 can store up to 9 onboard presets and has access to 128 more presets via MIDI.
The onboard presets can be accessed via the bank switches (A | B | C).
By pressing the bypass switch and tap switch simultaneously, the LED on the right will change from red to green to blue, allowing you to select presets for each bank.

Tune

The tune knob and toggle switch control three additional modulation parameters and three "Lo fi" effects.
These allow for even more variability in the respective modulation sounds.
The Lo fi effect adds a unique waveform to your sound.

Tweak

With creative control over three key modulations and three "Lo fi" effects, you can shape each program to your taste.

・Shape LFO: Choose from sine, triangle, or square waves.
Division: Adjusts the LFO speed when using tap tempo. Choose from quarter notes, 4-beat triplets, and eighth notes.
・Type: Select one of three types for each program.

INPUT / OUTPUT

The M1 supports multiple input/output configurations.

・Mono In / Mono Out
・Mono In / Stereo Out
・Stereo In / Stereo Out

MOMENTARY FUNCTIONS

Pressing and holding the TAP/SKIP switch creates a "skip" effect, like the needle skipping on a record player.
The last few milliseconds of the audio will automatically repeat until you release the switch.

Walrus Audio MAKO Series M1 High-Fidelity Modulation Machine | Review

I don't think there are many other multi-modulation synthesizers this size that can handle presets and MIDI control. Also, the quality of each sound is high, so overall it was a good purchase, but the following points were a bit disappointing. I wonder if they will be improved in future firmware updates.
① The output volume can be adjusted, but depending on the tone, the volume difference from when bypassed is so large that it cannot be handled by this. The chorus and phaser are turned up to the max and finally reach the same volume as when bypassed. On the other hand, the filter is too loud. The tremolo, vibrato, and rotary are just the right volume.
② There is a cut in the sound when switching tones or presets (of course there is no cut in the sound when turning it on and off).
(2022.9.23 postscript)
The above issues ① and ② have been improved in firmware version 1.16.
① The volume range of the chorus has been improved. ② The time when the sound cuts out has been significantly shortened. Therefore, I will change the rating from 4 stars to 5!
