Strymon SUNSET | Functions and Features

Distortion characters for each mode (6 types)
- Ge: Klon type. A thick, compressed drive.
- Texas: TS type. A persistent overdrive with a forward midrange.
- Treble: Treble Booster type. Emphasizes the high frequencies and pushes amps and other pedals.
- 2stage: Two-stage clipping that resembles a serialization of OD and DS.
- Hard: RAT to DS-1 series. Wide gain range, strong distortion.
- JFETs: EP Booster type. A booster that adds warmth and harmonics to the original sound.
Ge: Klon-like, thick and compressed drive
This overdrive uses a dual-path circuit with germanium diodes, and has a Klon Centaur-type architecture. Lowering the gain creates a natural drive with a parallel mix of clean signals, while raising the gain produces tight, thick distortion with an emphasis on the low-mid range. This mode has a comfortable vintage-like compression feel and thickness.
Texas: TS-type, persistent overdrive with a forward midrange
The most popular overdriveSoft clipping circuit (TS type)It is configured with one stage of op-amp amplification followed by symmetrical clipping diodes, and is characterized by a smooth and persistent distortion with a unique lift in the midrange (the so-called "mid hump"). It is also suitable for creating thick lead tones from blues to rock.
Treble: Treble Booster type, emphasizes the high frequencies and pushes the amp or other pedals
This is a clean boost that literally imitates a treble booster. It is designed to cut the low frequencies according to the operation of the Tone knob, making it the perfect mode for tightening up the distortion of an amp like a range master, or for pushing other drive pedals. The gain itself is clean, but by cutting out excess low frequencies, the sound comes forward and gives a crisp outline.
2stage: Two-stage clipping, like serializing OD and DS
As the name 2-stage suggests, this overdrive creates distortion in two stages: soft clipping and hard clipping. It is designed to stack overdrive and distortion in series, and the EQ is tuned to add thickness to the midrange while retaining the low frequencies, covering a wide gain range from light distortion on the crunch side to beefy saturation just before saturation. This mode has a similar concept to Barber Direct Drive and Mad Professor Sweet Honey Overdrive.
Hard: RAT to DS-1 type, wide gain range, strong distortion
This is high-gain distortion with a single-stage hard clipping circuit. This is an architecture that uses opposing diodes to create heavy distortion after op-amp amplification. Typical examples include the ProCo RAT, BOSS DS-1, and MXR Distortion+. The Sunset's Hard mode is an aggressive distortion similar to these, and when the drive knob is turned all the way up, it produces a rough sound that approaches fuzz. On the other hand, if you turn down the gain, it can be set to a surprisingly transparent crunch, making it easy to use.
JFET: EP Booster type, a booster that adds warmth and harmonics to the original sound
Although it is a clean boost mode, the key point is that it uses JFET transistors in its internal configuration (a preamp approach rather than a distortion pedal). The original is the preamp circuit of the Echoplex EP-3 tape echo, and it belongs to the full-range boost genre represented by the Xotic EP Booster. In Sunset's JFET mode, even if you increase the drive, the sound does not distort significantly, and the slight gain and mild compression characteristic of JFET can add thickness and warmth to the signal. It can be used alone to thicken clean sounds, and is also effective when used in combination with other channels as a boost.
Connection order switching and parallel use
The Config switch can be used to switch between A→B, B→A, and parallel (A+B).
For example: Texas → Hard is suitable for leads, Treble + Ge in parallel makes the clean sound thicker, etc., allowing for a high degree of freedom in sound creation.
Analog x digital hybrid design
- Input section: JFET preamplifier(Class-A) for natural response
- Distortion circuit: Modeling classic machines using high-performance DSP
- Output: 24bit/96kHz, 32bit floating point processing

The reason I bought it is because it has many functions! Nothing more, nothing less.
Sound House Than
There is an A channel (2x OD + treble booster) and a B channel (DIS + JFET booster), and you can set it up from A to B, or even B to A or A+B, so I personally feel that this one unit is all you need for distortion. I wanted a different flavor, so I placed an OD distortion in front of the sunset, but I basically use the sunset to control the settings via MIDI.
If you want to have all your distortion effects in one device, this is a great choice, especially since it can be controlled via MIDI.
I don't know if it's close to the pedals that were supposed to be used as a benchmark, but I'm happy with it in terms of functionality, and it lets me create the sound I want, so I'm very satisfied.
Although it is a distortion pedal that pleases everyone, the wide range of sound creation and ease of use give it 5 stars.
A-ch
■ Ge
Centaur-style distortion. It reminds me of Electro-Harmonix's Soulfood, but with a LOW-MID edge. The range is narrow, but the sound is thick and perfect for a booster.
■Texas
TS type distortion. On the other hand, this has a surprisingly wide range, and the sound of a TS9 fully driven corresponds to around 12 o'clock drive. The separation of the chords is excellent.B-ch
■2stage: This is a classic hard rock drive pedal. It has a wide range, and I was impressed by the SUHR Riot, which is one of the pedals I own. The crunch sound when the drive is set to 0 is particularly amazing.
■Hard: The highest gain mode. If you turn the knob all the way, it will sound like fuzz. BOSS's BD-2 also sounds like fuzz when fully driven, so it's similar in that respect, but even if you turn up the drive and tone quite a bit, it doesn't sound thin like the BD-2, and it has a solid grain. For both A and B, the switch at the very bottom is for clean boost.
There are so many different modes that you can use, it's hard to decide which one to use and how. It's amazing.
There's also a three-stage switch on the rear panel for adjusting the range, which is also great.
When you're playing in a band and the sound just isn't cutting through, or the highs feel too harsh, just turn on this switch and the tone will change dramatically. It can be used with any amp, and is also great when used in conjunction with other distortion effects. My favorite setting is Texas on the A-ch and 2-stage on the B-ch, with the rear panel tone set to Bright.
With 3x3 mode selection, 3 levels of tone, A→B, B→A and A+B connection orders, and TONE & GAIN settings for each mode, an incredibly wide range of sound making is possible.I was impressed by the potential to meet any request, based on the player's preferences or purpose of use.

Anyway, this is really amazing.
This product belongs to the category of "good enough to get rid of the pedals you already have," and like many others, I ended up getting rid of them. When I set it up and played various sounds, I naturally smiled and could play for hours. (It's hard to describe, isn't it?)
Amazon Than
First of all, the dynamic range and S/N ratio are high, and the resolution is good, or rather, it is very musical. There are probably many pedals that are numerically superior, but no matter how you set it up, it doesn't break down, or there are no holes. I understand some of today's digital technology, and I own and have tried pedals that I can use without any problems, but I tend to get tired of such pedals quickly. The sound is strangely beautiful or not three-dimensional... However, this SUNSET is very musical and makes me want to try various things.
Now, I think what everyone is wondering about is the gain range, but when used alone (A+B), it has plenty of room for high gain up to hard rock. For metal, there is no EQ adjustment for the middle range, so I think you can make it more bass-heavy by adjusting the equalizer or the amp. However, I don't think that this pedal is for that demographic. It also has noise reduction and is multifunctional. Personally, I was most impressed by the sound of the clean boost.
You might think it's a little expensive, but once you touch the actual instrument and play it, you'll probably think, "Is this price really okay? Strymon!"
I'm sure there are people all over the country who have bought and sold, sold and bought, many distortion pedals, and are now facing the same quagmire of effects pedals for the first time in years, but if you think about it carefully (it's important to stay calm), it's actually a great pedal that can perform multiple roles at a high level for the price of two or three pedals, so it's actually a bargain. So, I bought a Riverside from another store, not Amazon, so I'd like to compare them.
Hmm, this is... Strymon swamp?
Summary | The perfect solution for those who want a wide variety of distortion effects in one device
