Electro-Harmonix Memory Boy - A delay with mods inherited from the legendary machine [Sound demo and reviews]

An analog delay with a distinctive depth and richness, based on the famous EHX Memory Man.
Although the settings are somewhat for experts, this is a deep delay pedal that also features chorus and vibrato and can be used in a variety of ways.
About Electro Harmonix|About the brand

Electro-Harmonix, commonly known as Elehamo, is a prestigious pedal effects manufacturer founded by Mike Matthews in 1968. In the 1970s, the company rose to fame with the release of the historic distortion/fuzz box BIG MUFF. It has continued to walk alongside the history of rock, and now has a full lineup ranging from more than 10 types of distortion to digital pedals such as delays and vacuum tubes. Electro-Harmonix continues to develop products from the perspective of musicians.

Starting with the first Memory Man in the early 1970s, to the Deluxe Memory Man, which is used by countless top players, Electro-Harmonix has produced many legendary analog delays. The Memory Boy is a new analog delay that inherits the warm and natural analog tone of those legendary machines.
Over two years of development has gone into this effect, which offers outstanding character and artistic tone modulation capabilities. The longest delay time is 2ms, and you can control either the delay time or the modulation rate with an expression pedal, allowing you to control the effect in real time on stage.
- A new analog delay that inherits the legacy of the EHX classic
- Warm and natural analog tone
- TRIANGLE/SQUARE switch for selecting waveforms
TRIANGLE: Smooth modulation sound
SQUARE: Pitch-shifting sound - EXP pedal allows control of delay time and modulation rate
- True Bypass

Electro-Harmonix Memory Boy | Review and reputation
The Memory Boy sounds great right out of the box, but mastering it is another story! The four controls are straightforward: Delay adjusts the delay time. Depth controls how much modulation you get (from none to a lot). Blend mixes the dry and wet signals (equal at 4 o'clock). Feedback controls the delay repeats (including self-oscillation, but be careful with this one - I turned it too far clockwise on my first try and was temporarily deafened by the horrible shriek emanating from the 12x4 in front of my head).
So far I've mostly used the pedal for ambient soundscapes and spacey clean riffs (especially effective with a phase pedal at the same time). It's not so good for heavy sounds. Any distortion coming from anywhere seems to drown out all the repeats, regardless of the pedal, but I suspect making the signal wetter than dry would improve it. In a short experiment I found it to be very good for rockabilly and surf sounds as well. As I usually play very heavy doom metal, this pedal has opened my eyes to other possibilities! My main guitar is a Jackson KVX10 (high output twin humbucker) and my amp is a 1984 Peavey Road Master (160W tube amp).
However, it is important to note that the sound and operation seems to depend on the setup and power supply. I first tried it alone in the effects loop of my amplifier, powered by the supplied adapter. Then, as part of an effects chain, using a pedalboard power supply. In the chain, the delay is longer, the sound is warmer, and the feedback is more controllable... The instruction manual recommends using the supplied adapter, but any power supply will do as long as it runs at 9V/200-250mA.

Among the many delay effects, the ELECTRO-HARMONIX/Memory Boy is a masterpiece that creates a deep and rich sound. This one unit can create a fantastical, floating psychedelic taste like early Pink Floyd. You can also use the feedback knob to inject druggy sound effects. It is recommended for players who want to create a spacey sound in live performances, such as avant-garde and acoustic guitar, as well as for playing in psychedelic bands. It is definitely one of the top five Electro-Harmonix masterpieces.
