The origins and appeal of the Suhr brand

John Sur's journey and the founding of the brand

John Suhr has been active as a renowned guitar builder since the 1970s, and was involved in making guitars under the name Pensa-Suhr at Rudy's Music in New York.

In 1994, he moved to the Fender Custom Shop as a senior master builder, contributing to the development of the Stratocaster Contemporary Series, before going independent in 1997 and launching his own brand, Suhr Guitars (JS Technologies).

At the time of its establishment, Peter Frampton and others were among the investors, and they worked with Steve Smith, an expert in CNC machine tools, to set up a state-of-the-art manufacturing system.

Thus, based on John Suhr's belief that "There is a reason for everything," the Suhr brand was born, pursuing sophisticated guitar designs based on scientific evidence.

Outstanding craftsmanship and the latest technology

Suhr has established a production system that combines skilled craftsmanship with the latest CNC routers and laser processing machines.

In woodworking, they even have the know-how to measure the frequency characteristics of the body and neck, and by combining experience and science they achieve the high-quality acoustic characteristics they aim for.

Thanks to co-founder Steve Smith's precise CNC programming, the wood is CNC shaped to the closest possible finished shape.

By precisely controlling the amount and speed of cutting at one time, and performing optimal cutting while preventing the wood from burning or chipping, we are able to achieve a level of precision in the neck shape and other aspects that is impossible to achieve by hand.

This ultra-high precision, uniform processing actually brings out the inherent individuality of the wood, ensuring consistent quality and acoustic balance in every individual piece.

Furthermore, during the assembly process, the neck pocket is fitted by hand by a specialized craftsman to achieve an exquisite joint that is neither too tight nor too loose.

This allows the neck and body to resonate as one, and also improves tuning and sustain stability.

Carefully selected wood and design philosophy

Suhr does not compromise when it comes to selecting materials, and will ruthlessly reject any wood that does not meet their standards, even if it is a rare, high-quality wood.

Based on his many years of experience, John Sur has a clear answer to the question of "what is the best combination of body and neck materials?" and makes suggestions based on the characteristics of each wood, such as "a one-piece maple neck with a swamp ash body," "a mahogany neck with Honduran mahogany," and "basswood can be used with any neck material."

Suhr's favorite, which he calls the "Holy Grail of Tone," is a quilted or flame maple top, basswood back, and one-piece maple neck, and its combination of brightness, depth, and thick mid-to-low tones is also reflected in Suhr's standard models (Standard Pro and Modern Pro).

John Suhr is a man who finds more enjoyment in research, development and design than in the actual manufacturing itself, and Suhr guitars are based on the attitude of "putting an end to the myths of guitar making by taking a scientific approach rather than relying on God."

Modern playability and reliability

Suhr guitars have a traditional look but are high-end component guitars equipped with the latest technology inside.

One of its features is the compound radius fingerboard (e.g. 10” near the nut to 14” in the high positions) that comes as standard, providing a vintage-like feel when playing open bass chords and a low string height setting for high-pitched solos.

In addition, the stainless steel frets are expertly hammered in and precision finished with a Plek machine, making them resistant to wear, smooth bending, and ensuring accurate intonation.

The "metallic tone" that is unique to stainless steel is skillfully suppressed, and the product is renowned for its pleasantly extended high range.

In addition, the Buzz Feiten Tuning System (BFTS) averages the pitch between frets, ensuring consistent tuning accuracy in every position.

During the neck manufacturing process, a thorough process of gradual natural drying is used to remove any warping, and the selling point that "the neck is stable even when new" is emphasized.

It is generally said that "necks are prone to moving for several years after they are new," but at Suhr, we ensure that there is sufficient interval drying between each process, from sawing to fingerboard gluing to final processing, to minimize neck deformation after completion.

These modern designs combine to make Suhr guitars exceptionally playable and reliable, making them the ideal "work tool" for professionals on the job.

Innovative electronics and pickups

Suhr is a manufacturer that also produces amplifiers and effects, so the electrical circuits built into their guitars have been meticulously designed.

For example, you can change the capacitance of the tone circuit to correspond to each pickup, or intentionally change the resistance of the volume and tone pots.Simple controls and optimal soundIt is designed to give you:

Models equipped with a rear humbucker also feature a "blower" circuit that bypasses the circuit when the volume is turned all the way up, outputting a pure signal.Open sound without unnecessary colorationcontributes to.

For single coil modelsSSCII (Silent Single Coil) noise reductionIt has a built-in hum canceller that eliminates 60Hz hum noise without the need for a power source.Vintage tone preserved, just noise reduction international success.

*SSC is a patented technology of Ilitch Electronics, and there is an anecdote where John Suhr said, "I regret not having come up with it myself."

The pickups themselves are all produced in-house at our own California factory, with everything from material selection to design and winding being done in-house.

SuhrThe same magnets as those used by Fender in the 60'sWe have obtained and use this proprietary technology (a trade secret), which allows us to reproduce the fast response and sharp attack of old guitars.

Furthermore, it is designed with modern ultra-high gain distortion, clear tone, and digital recording environments in mind, and is adjusted to produce a beautiful coil-tapped sound if necessary.

In fact, Suhr has produced many signature pickups,

  • Pete Thorn's "Thornbucker"
  • Doug Aldrich's high output humbuckers
  • Michael Landau's "ML Single Coil"

The lineup also includes many products created in collaboration with top artists, such as:

The dialogue with these musicians has given birth toResolving players' frustrations with their own hands" This attitude is consistently reflected in Suhr products.

Its simple design combines high basic performance with ease of use, making it an ideal tool for professional use.

Main model lineup and features of Suhr guitars

Suhr offers a wide range of models, from Stratocaster types to Telecaster types and modern shapes.

Basically, there is the "Custom" series, which is made to order for each individual glass, and the "Pro" series, which keeps the price down by fixing the specifications and producing them in batches. There are also series that are derived from the Pro series, such as Satin (simplified paintwork) and Antique (aged finish), as well as the J Select series, which was designed in Japan.

Here, a representative model is

  • Classic S
  • Standard
  • Modern
  • Alt T
  • Mateus Asato Signature

We will pick out some of these and explain their features, specifications, and target audience.
Use this as a reference when choosing a model that suits your playing style and the sound you are looking for.

Classic S – Vintage meets modern Strat

The Classic series is a line that features traditional shapes such as Stratocaster (S), Telecaster (T), and Jazzmaster (JM).

It is finished with pickups that are conscious of vintage sound and a slightly retro playing feel.

Among them, the Classic S features an alder body and an SSS or HSS pickup configuration, giving it a tone close to that of a classic Stratocaster, but is assembled with the high level of perfection that is unique to Suhr.

Alder has a strong, midrange tone that is favored in blues and rock, and this alder body is used throughout the Classic series.

The neck has traditional 22 frets and is secured with a joint plate, and the heel retains its classic shape to transmit neck vibrations to the body without any loss.

On the other hand, the fingerboard radius is 9" to 12" compound, stainless steel frets and a PLEK finish, and locking pegs are standard, providing modern enhanced playability and stability.

The pickups are vintage-like low-output single-coil "V60LP" and "ML," and while noise is reduced using SSCII as needed, they produce a rich sound that has been described as having "a smooth, sustained sound when played."

The Classic S is a vintage-oriented model that has been polished for practical use.

  • I like the old Strat sound.
  • But I don't want to bother with adjustments or noise.

This model is ideal for intermediate to advanced players.

In addition, the Classic T (Telecaster type) is available with two singles as well as a neck humbucker.

The Classic JM (Jazzmaster type) also comes in an HH configuration model, and both are popular as traditional models modernized in the Suhr style.

Standard – The ultimate in versatility and stability.

As the name suggests, the Standard is Suhr's signature model.

This Super Strat combines a slightly smaller "Dinky" Strat-shaped body with a 22-fret neck.

The body is one size smaller than a Fender Stratocaster, so it fits the body well, and the sharp edges and deep cutaway give it a modern look.

The joints are firmly secured with traditional plate fasteners, providing a vintage-like sound and stability.

The greatest feature of the Standard is its versatility.

  • Compatible with HSH and HSS pickup arrangements
  • Choice of Gotoh 510 bridge or Floyd Rose
  • Locking pegs included as standard

The structure is designed to prevent the tuning from going out of tune even with intense arm bending or choking.

The fingerboard has a 10″-14″ compound radius.
The Even C neck shape, jumbo-sized stainless steel frets, and a grip that feels like it sticks to your hand make for excellent playability.

The body material is John Suhr's favorite
Basswood + maple top constructionAdopted.

The "crystal clean" sound that this combination produces is an essential feature of the Standard.

From users,

  • "Wide range and open sound"
  • "I can do anything from jazz to rock to metal."
  • "She's too good of a student, but that's her strength."

There are many reviews such as,Players who want to play anything, regardless of genreFor me, this is the ideal book.

The body is even smaller than the Classic.
The waist curve is offsetAsymmetrical Shape.

It fits perfectly when you hold it, and its smooth, flowing curves make it look

You can easily access the high positions up to the 24th fret.

The fingerboard has jumbo stainless steel frets and a 10"-14" compound radius.

The final 24F will not have position marks.
It creates a modern design and a visually open feel.

The pickup arrangement is basically HSH or HH.
The 5-way selector gives you a wide variety of tap and mix sounds.

In particular, the wiring design allows automatic coil tapping in 2 and 4 positions even in the HH configuration.
Achieving both aesthetic wiring and ease of useIt embodies the following.

Completely eliminates sound quality loss due to the circuit.

This allows for the unique Suhr sound.Open sound with little compressionIt can be obtained.

The bridge can be selected from Gotoh 510 or Floyd Rose.

While it has received high praise for its high level of perfection, there have also been some harsh criticisms due to its high-end nature.

Here we will introduce both good and bad reviews based on actual feedback from domestic and international users.

Good reputation (positive reviews)

Positive reviews
  • Outstanding playability and precision
    "Extremely high playability"
"Neck shape that feels like it sticks to your hand"
    "The fret finish is excellent."
We hear a lot of people say that they can concentrate on playing without stress.
  • Sound separation and range
"The tone of each string is clear and the chord feel is consistent."
"It has a wide range and all frequencies are output smoothly."
Especially the clean to crunch range.Openness and transparency of soundHas been rated.
  • Versatile across all genres
"Blues, jazz, rock, metal, anything goes."
One person said, "If I had to choose just one guitar, I'd choose Suhr."
  • Perfect noise countermeasures (SSCII)
Even with single coil models, there is no noticeable hum noise.
Many users are experiencing the benefits of this in actual recording studios and live music venues.
  • High manufacturing precision and part selection
"The body finish is like a work of art"
"The wiring is beautiful, and even the knob torque and tremolo balance are perfect."

Bad reviews (negative reviews)

Negative reviews
  • The sound is light and the bass is lacking
Some players feel that the bass is not as intense as a Stratocaster.
Some people say that it is "too neat and lacks punch," especially in comparison to vintage guitars.
  • Weak personality/too goody-goody
The high level of perfection has backfired, with some people feeling that it is "bland, for better or worse," and "lacks interest."
Those who seek the unique "flavor" of vintage guitars may see it as lacking in individuality.
  • Expensive and hard to reach
Some people said, "It's too high and I'm scared to play it," and "I don't think it's worth my skill level."
Because it is a high-end product, the fact that it is not at a price that people can easily afford can easily be a negative factor.
  • New and hard to find (limited domestic stock)
In particular, limited edition and signature models are imported in small quantities domestically, and there are physical hurdles such as "not being able to see them in stores" and "not being able to try them out."
