What is a FRFR speaker?

What is FRFR? Full Range Flat ResponseIt stands for "neutral" and refers to a speaker that reproduces the input signal neutrally without coloring it in any way.

Simply put, it is a speaker that reproduces a wide frequency range flatly and faithfully reproduces any guitar tone.

Because it produces a sound that is free of quirks, like a "blank canvas," you can use the sounds you've created with the latest digital guitar equipment, such as Helix, Kemper, and Quad Cortex, without having to worry about the cabinet simulations provided by modeling amps clashing with the characteristics of actual speakers.

In other words, by using FRFR speakers, you can reproduce the sound you hear on headphones or through a PA on stage or in the studio.

Now, let's take a closer look at the points to consider when choosing a FRFR speaker and some recommended models.

How to choose an FRFR speaker

Output/Headroom

Guitar signals can produce very large instantaneous peaks, so choose a model with ample wattage and headroom. The higher the wattage, the less likely it is to distort even at high volumes, and the easier it is to maintain a clean sound. For live performances, we recommend a model with at least several hundred watts.

speaker size

There are various sizes available, ranging from 8 inches to 15 inches. 8 to 10 inches are compact and suitable for practicing at home or small rehearsals, while 12 inches is a standard size for guitarists and has a good balance, so it is used in many models. 15 inches have high bass reproduction capabilities and are suitable for use as a bass guitar, but they are larger and heavier. Choose one that suits your playing style and how often you will be carrying it around.

Weight/Size

One of the great benefits of using digital equipment is mobility, but if the FRFR speaker itself is too heavy, it will be difficult to transport. Small models weigh around 10kg, while large models can weigh over 20kg. Consider your actual usage scenario, such as whether you will be traveling by car a lot or whether you will need to carry it by hand, and choose a reasonable weight.

Shape and installation method

FRFR speakers come in two types: monitor speaker type (wedge-shaped, can be placed on the floor) and guitar cabinet type (box-shaped, can be stacked). The monitor type is convenient if you want to place it on the floor and direct the sound towards you, while the cabinet type fits better if you want the look and feel of a traditional amplifier. Many models are also pole-mountable, and can be placed on a stand like a PA speaker if necessary.

Input/Output/Functions

Functions: Check the number and type of inputs. Standard phone or XLR combo inputs for guitars are common, but some models have stereo inputs or multiple channels, so you can use it to play orchestra sound sources in addition to guitars. Also, products with XLR line outputs can send sound directly to a PA mixer while outputting sound from your own speakers. Higher-end models have various additional functions such as simple EQ, cabinet emulation function, preset memory, digital connection, and Bluetooth function. For example, the Line 6 Powercab series, which will be described later, has a built-in speaker cabinet simulation and IR loader function, and the latest TONEX Cab has a unique function called AmpTone and even MIDI compatibility. Selection criteria include whether the necessary functions are available and whether it matches your equipment setup.

HeadRush / FRFR-108

Product Features
  • Small but powerful
Despite being an 8-inch 2-way speaker, it delivers monster-class power with a maximum output of 2000W and a maximum SPL of 129dB. You can turn down the volume at home and still have plenty of volume, and it's plenty loud enough for a small live performance.
  • High quality flat response
The specially designed 8-inch woofer and high-frequency driver provide a wide, flat response with a frequency response of 52Hz to 22kHz. The sound created with the multi-effector is reproduced clearly and accurately. It's a pleasure to hear the tone you intended, from clean to heavy.
  • Portable Design
The unit is lightweight and compact (approximately 9.2 kg), making it easy to carry. You can place it on the floor like a monitor, or pole mount it with a separately sold stand. It can be installed on a small stage or in a studio without taking up much space. It is small but sturdy, and the front of the case is made of a steel grill to protect the speaker.

If you value compactness and ease of use, we recommend the HeadRush FRFR-108. This small powered cabinet with an 8-inch speaker is perfect for a wide range of situations, from practicing at home to small live performances. It weighs just 9.2kg, making it easy to load and unload into a car or carry around.

User reviews
  • "Paired with Helix LT for home practice. It can be played at a decent volume even late at night, and has enough sound pressure to be brought into the studio.I was surprised when it came out."
  • "It weighs in at around 9kg, so it's really easy to carry around.Even though it's only 8 inches, it produces surprisingly low tones. So, even for small-scale live performances, I can get by with just this one unit."

YAMAHA / MS101-4

Product Features
  • 4-inch full-range + 10 W power amplifier
The sound pressure is sufficient for a desktop monitor. It is fanless so it operates completely silently.

Professional specs that can withstand rough handling when transporting it around or on location.
  • Intended Use
Versatile for desktop FRFR/video streaming monitor/talkback on camera tripod/personal PA for electronic drums and keyboards, etc.

The MS101-4 is Yamaha's standard compact powered speaker that realizes "full-scale monitoring in a tabletop size." Although it is a small 4-inch full-range speaker, it has a clean 10W built-in amplifier inherited from professional equipment and a highly efficient bass reflex design.Reproduces the subtle nuances created by digital modelers without any distortionThanks to the fanless design, there is no noise at all, and the microphone does not pick up fan noise even during distribution or recording. Since the input can be mixed simultaneously with three systems, XLR, phone, and RCA, it is possible to complete Helix + smartphone accompaniment + talk microphone with one MS3-1.

By utilizing the M5 screw points on the bottom and back, you can attach it to a microphone stand or camera tripod and place it directly at "ear height".Clear sound positioning and sense of sound localization even at low volumeThe rear through-out allows you to easily link two units, and by splitting them into left and right, you can create a stereo environment even in a small studio. The built-in AC universal power supply means you can use it immediately overseas,Compact yet commercial qualityIt's a condensed unit. You can't expect as much low-frequency volume as the FRFR cabinet, but it's the perfect choice for guitarists who want to hear a realistic line sound when practicing at home or making videos.

User reviews
  • "Introduced to check the sound of Helix Floor. It sounds almost the same as the presets created with headphones. This saved time when adjusting the mix."
  • "It doesn't get in the way even when placed on a table.Attach it to a microphone stand and use it for live broadcasts. It can also be used for other purposes. It is fanless and extremely quiet.

Laney / LFR-112

Product Features
  • The peace of mind of a guitar-specific design
Laney is also famous for its vacuum tube amplifiers, but it has been tuned to maximize performance when combined with multi-effects and amp simulators, making use of its know-how. With a full-range design that supports a wide range of frequencies, it can reproduce the sound of various digital equipment without loss. The output is RMS 200W, which is more than enough for practical use, covering everything from low volume at home to high volume at live performances.
  • Flat response and powerful bass:
The frequency response is officially stated as 47Hz to 20kHz, so there is plenty of room to reproduce not only the guitar range but also the low range. The LFR-112 also produces a powerful low end that cannot be reproduced by small monitor speakers, and some user reviews say that "the sound produced by small speakers has more bass and is more powerful." Thanks to the flat response, you can get a natural sound even when the amp model cabinet setting is turned off, which is a nice feature.
  • Fully featured and looks great on stage
The top of the front grill is equipped with LED illumination, which can be lit up with the flip of a switch (it looks great during live performances). The back is equipped with an XLR DI out, and the cabinet emulation switch allows you to select "FRFR mode / 1x12 mode / 4x12 mode". For example, when sending to a PA using the DI out, you can add a cabinet sound equivalent to 1x12 or 4x12, allowing you to be flexible depending on the situation. The body is made of a traditional guitar cabinet structure and is very sturdy. It is heavy at about 18.9 kg, but it is built to withstand loads, so you can feel at ease. It is a popular all-purpose FRFR with an excellent balance of appearance, sound quality, and functionality.

The LFR-112, made by Laney, a long-established British amplifier manufacturer, is a model designed as a "FRFR cabinet for guitarists." At first glance, the exterior looks like a normal guitar cabinet, and its stage-ready looks are appealing. The inside is a solid FRFR specification, and outputs the modeler's sound as it is. It can be said to be a versatile model that can be used from home to live performances.

User reviews
  • "The LED lights upShining on a darkened stageThe sound is also thick with lows, and even in FR mode, it still has a guitar-like quality, which is a nice touch.
  • "Back1x12/4x12 emulator switching is surprisingly convenient"You can instantly change the character to match the acoustics of the venue."

Laney / LFR-212

Product Features
  • Impressive stage power
The 2 x 12-inch + high-frequency driver configuration delivers a very rich sound as a full-range speaker. The speakers are arranged vertically, so even when standing, the upper speaker is close to your ears, allowing you to monitor your own sound on stage. As the name suggests, it has a strong ability to "move the air," and emits a sound with a strong presence that doesn't get lost in the band. In fact, some people have said, "I was able to rehearse with Helix + LFR-212 instead of a bass amp with no problem (the bass is also sufficient)," and it is versatile enough to be used not only for guitars but also for 7-string and 8-string instruments and basses.
  • Realistic cabinet experience
While the basic functions and sound aspects are similar to the LFR-112, this model pursues the experience of "looking and sounding like a guitar cabinet". In addition to the classic vertical 2 x 12 cabinet look, it also has the aforementioned LED illumination, and the way it appears on a darkened stage is just cool. It is also unique in that you can switch between FRFR mode and built-in cabinet tone (an emulation that reproduces the characteristics of several cabinets), allowing you to get closer to your favorite sound depending on the situation. In short, it has "the best looks and functionality among FRFR" and is perfect for those who value both sound creation and stage performance.
  • Warnings
Due to its large size and weight (the official weight has not been disclosed, but it is definitely over 20kg), it may be difficult to handle unless you plan to move it around by car. However, it is well worth the power and functionality, and has been described as "the coolest powered speaker". It is a model that can be strongly recommended for those who are serious about sound.

If you want even more power and a better stage presence, Laney's LFR-212 is a good choice. It's a true powerhouse with two 2-inch speakers arranged vertically in a stately cabinet, boasting a peak power of 12W. It can be used with ease in loud bands and large venues, and it has a huge visual impact. Recently, it has also attracted attention as Japanese guitarist Li-sa-X has been using it in her live performances.

User reviews
  • "The stereo output of the Quad Cortex can be played together. The impact of the vertical 2x12 is greater than you can imagine. And, on a club-sized stage, we can perform without a PA.”
  • "LED illumination + vertical cabinetLooks strongIt's heavy, but it's no problem if you're traveling by car. Once you get used to it, you won't be able to go back."

Line 6 / Powercab 112 Plus

Product Features
  • FRFR mode and speaker mode
The biggest feature of Powercab is that it can output sound in two different modes. One is the general FRFR mode, which faithfully reproduces the sound created by the modeler using custom-designed speakers and high-frequency drivers. The other is Powercab's unique speaker modeling mode, which can reproduce the characters of six classic guitar cabinets such as Vintage 2 and Greenback. The modeler can turn off the cabinet IR and add their favorite cabinet sound on the Powercab side. This function is popular because it "eliminates the digital smell and makes it sound closer to a real amp sound." The Plus version also supports additional loading of user IRs, and a total of 1 sounds can be saved as presets and switched between.
  • Powerful Helix Integration
Helix series users will particularly appreciate the Line 6 Link (AES/EBU) connector for digital connection and MIDI control. Powercab can automatically switch modes and settings when switching presets from Helix, allowing for truly coordinated play that only genuine products can offer. Of course, it can be used with other companies' multi-effects without any problems, but when combined with Helix, connections can be made neatly with a minimum number of cables, and for stereo, all you need is a Link connection of two Powercabs.
  • Full specifications
The Plus model has a power amplifier output of 250W (1 x 12") and a sturdy plywood cabinet construction, making it highly durable. The rear is equipped with professional-grade features, such as two combo inputs (XLR/phone) and a through-out, a USB terminal (supports audio I/F function), and MIDI IN/OUT. The case is designed to be used as a floor-standing monitor, and a tilt stand is built into the bottom (included only with the Plus model). The front of the unit is equipped with an LCD display, allowing you to check the current mode and IR name at a glance. It weighs approximately 2kg, which is standard for a 16" model, but this is within acceptable limits considering the many features it is packed with. It lives up to its reputation as being "FRFR packed with all the latest features," making it a unit that hits all the right spots.

The Line 6 Helix series is an overwhelmingly popular multi-effects unit. The Powercab series is an FRFR product made by Line 6, the company that created Helix. The Powercab 112 Plus in particular is attracting attention as a high-end FRFR product that packs advanced functions into a 1x12" active cabinet. Not only can it be used as a regular FRFR monitor, but it also has the unique appeal of being a cabinet with built-in speaker simulation.

User reviews
  • "AES connection with HelixSingle cable & automatic preset switchingIt dramatically speeds up setup on site."
  • "The V30 simulation in speaker mode is excellent.Realistic sound even when cabinet IR is offThis gives it a more amp-like feel.

Kemper / Power Kabinet

Product Features
  • Kemper Optimized Design
The Power Kabinet is equipped with one Celestion "Kemper Kone" speaker (12 inches). By working with this special speaker and the software of the Kemper unit, it is possible to reproduce the frequency characteristics (imprints) of 1 types of famous guitar cabinets. You can switch between the characters of famous speakers such as Blackstar, Jensen, and EV with the touch of a button, and enjoy the change as if you were changing the real cabinet. When using Kemper, it is very useful as a function to get closer to the sound heard from a real guitar cabinet, and it is said that you can get a realistic "feeling of playing an amp" by playing with a speaker sound that matches the profiled amp. Of course, the normal FRFR mode can also be selected, and it operates as a flat speaker when equipment other than Kemper is connected.
  • Easy to use powered model
The Power Kabinet has a built-in 200W class D power amplifier and can be directly connected to a Kemper Stage or Rack (non-powered). 200W is enough for a band's stage monitor, and unless the venue is very large, it should be fine. On the other hand, if you have a Kemper Power Head, you can choose the non-powered Kabinet, so it's nice that you can choose between a powered or passive version depending on the purpose. The cabinet is the same size as a conventional 1x12 cabinet, making it easy to carry, and it is relatively lightweight at about 11kg (thanks to the speakers that use neodymium magnets). It has a classic design with black tolex covering, and it doesn't look out of place when combined with other products besides Kemper.
  • Benefits for non-Kemper users
Of course, it is a perfect match, so much so that it is said that "If you have a Kemper, there is no way you can't choose this," but the Power Kabinet is also attractive as a high-quality FRFR speaker for other multi-amp users. The performance of the Kone speaker, developed in collaboration with Celestion, is very high, providing a punchy and clear sound even during flat playback. Also, if there is a possibility of switching to Kemper products in the future, it is reassuring to know that this cabinet can be used as is at that time. It is such a highly complete unit that some people say, "If you are unsure about various FRFRs, you can't go wrong by choosing the Kemper Kabinet."

The ultimate choice for Kemper Profiling Amplifier users is the Kemper Power Kabinet. This is a genuine Kemper powered cabinet, a model that thoroughly pursues matching with the Profiler body. Of course, it can be used as a FRFR speaker with multi-amps other than Kemper, but its true value is shown when combined with Kemper.

User reviews
  • "Just by switching the Imprint, the 'amp in the room' feeling is dramatically increased. It's fun to clearly hear the difference between the V30 and Greenback."
  • "200W is loud enough. It weighs just 11kg, so it can be transported without a car."Kemper users will not regret buying this."

IK Multimedia / TONEX Cab

Product Features
  • High power and portable
It is equipped with a 12-inch custom Celestion speaker + 1-inch high-performance compression driver, and has a built-in power amplifier of **350W RMS (700W peak)**. With an incredible maximum sound pressure of 132dB, it has plenty of room even on stages where high volume is required. And yet it weighs only about 12.7kg, which is light for its class, minimizing the burden of carrying it around. The size is about the same as a typical 1x12 cabinet, making it easy to carry in a car.
  • AmpTone Controls
The biggest feature of the TONEX Cab is the new function named "Amp Tone" knob. When you turn it up, it is designed to add the "airiness of playing an amp in a room" that is often lacking in digital amps. Specifically, the DSP complements the resonance of the cabinet and the diffusion of high frequencies due to directivity, turning flat line sounds into three-dimensional sounds. It is said to "give you the feeling of feeling the sound as if you are bathed in it next to the amp," and is a good news feature for guitarists who want to eliminate the digital smell. It also has a 3-band EQ, so you can adjust the low, mid, and high frequencies of the sound output to suit your environment. Up to eight AmpTone and EQ settings can be saved in the main memory as presets** and can be switched from the MIDI terminal on the back.
  • Cutting-edge convenience features
TONEX Cab is packed with other features that will take care of your needs. The built-in IR loader allows you to load your favorite cabinet IR (impulse response) into the main unit and use it. You can also link multiple TONEX Cabs to create a stereo or multi-stack setup. The back is equipped with two combo input terminals (XLR/line), and in addition to the guitar input, there is also an AUX input, and the volume of each can be adjusted individually. The output side also has an XLR line out (with ground lift), and you can select pre/post speaker output (before or after applying AmpTone or IR). It can be used flexibly, such as playing your own sound on stage while sending the post-processed sound to the PA. Two metal tilt-back feet are also included on the bottom, so you can tilt it at a monitor angle when placed on the floor. It's a very comprehensive set-up, and considering the price and features, it's a good deal.
  • High expectations as the latest FRFR
Thus, the TONEX Cab is an ambitious product that incorporates all possible functions at this time, and is said to be "an ideal solution that complements the amp-like qualities that amp modelers have been lacking." Although it has only just been released, it has attracted a lot of attention, and in reviews of the actual product, it has been highly praised as "very impressive, just as the specs on paper suggest." It is a product of a new era that has the potential to rewrite the standard for FRFR speakers in the future, so it is definitely worth checking out.

TONEX Cab is a cutting-edge FRFR speaker that will be released in 2024-2025. It is a powered cabinet developed by renowned audio manufacturer IK Multimedia to match their AI amp modeling technology TONEX, but it can also be used with other companies' multi-effectors. It is an ambitious work that incorporates new innovations to reproduce the feeling of an "amp in room," and is attracting attention as the next generation of FRFR.

User reviews
  • "When you turn up the AmpTone knobThe room's ambience is added, making the "box" vibrate. The digital smell fades away instantly."
  • "350W and 12kg is amazing. The latest FRFR that even guitarists without a car can carryWe are paying close attention to this.”

Friedman / ASC-12

Product Features
  • Rich sound and high resolution
Equipped with a 12-inch Celestion speaker + 1-inch treble driver, and a 500W internal bi-amp configuration (Class G), this is a serious product. Its sound has been described as "rich and crystal clear," and it expresses everything from subtle nuances to powerful riffs. It also has a wide dynamic range, and can produce everything from delicate clean tones to heavy distorted sounds with a sense of sound pressure. Its acoustic performance is so perfect that it has been said, "With this response, you'll never want to go back to a regular guitar cabinet."
  • Robust housing and high reliability
The enclosure (box) is made of sturdy Baltic birch (white birch plywood), and the exterior and interior are finished to the same high quality as boutique amps. It weighs over 20kg, but it is also tough enough to withstand harsh use such as touring. It has earned the trust of professionals as being "unrivaled" in both sound quality and physical properties.
  • Stage-ready usability
If you place the ASC-12 directly on the floor, it can be angled like a monitor (it can also be set up for backline use), and the input is a simple and easy-to-use XLR/phone combo terminal. It doesn't have any particularly flashy features, but it's a stoic design that "competes with sound." Combined with Friedman's sophisticated looks, placing it proudly on stage will satisfy your desire to own it. It's expensive, but it's one of the best choices for guitarists who want quality that matches the price.

The ASC-12 from Friedman, USA, is popular among core users as a "FRFR that reproduces the feel of a tube amp as closely as possible." Friedman is famous for its high-quality boutique guitar amps, and the ASC-12 is a powered FRFR cabinet created by Friedman with a professional ear. With top-class sound quality and robustness, this model is truly professional specification.

User reviews
  • "AnywaysThe low-end push is outstandingEven at high gain, it doesn't get muddy and the chords sound distinct.
  • "You need to be prepared for the weight of over 20kg,The sound and build quality are of a "lifetime equipment" class.Once you try it, you won't be able to let it go."

Mission Engineering / Gemini 2

Product Features
  • Full stereo support on its own
The biggest feature of the Gemini 2 is that it can output stereo with just one unit. Although the speakers of the left and right channels are close to each other, Mission's unique cabinet design projects an "amazingly wide sound spectrum" and allows you to fully experience the stereo image. For example, the left and right jumps of stereo delays and the spread of choruses can be fully reproduced with just this cabinet. It would be even more ideal to prepare two units and use them separately on the left and right, but the advantage of only having to transport one unit is great.
  • Punchy and clear sound image
With an output of 220W (110W x 2), the sound emitted from the two speakers is very powerful. The bass is also strong, and it has been highly praised for being "extremely articulate." The sound resolution is high, and even sounds with complex effects sound clear and not muddy. It is an ideal choice for those who want uncompromising sound quality.
  • Equipped with the latest features
The Gemini 2 has built-in Bluetooth functionality, and can wirelessly play music from a smartphone (convenient for playing an orchestra for practice, etc.). It also has a USB audio interface function, making it versatile, allowing you to connect it directly to a PC for recording and playback. The cabinet itself looks like luxury furniture and has a strong presence, and although it is quite heavy (nearly 30 kg), it should not be a problem if you assume it will be movable using casters, etc. Overall, it is a unit that pursues the best FRFR experience regardless of cost, and is popular with advanced users who prioritize quality over price.

If you want to achieve stereo playback with a single FRFR speaker, Mission Engineering's Gemini 2 is a unique product. It is a rare model equipped with two 2-inch speakers on the left and right and a stereo power amplifier inside. Although it is expensive, it is a high-end FRFR cabinet that is perfect for those who want to enjoy the stereo effect perfectly.

User reviews
  • "One unit completes your stereo system. The sense of spaciousness is on another levelAnd the chorus and stereo delay really feel good."
  • "USB audio can also be usedUse the same equipment for home recording and live performancesIt's expensive but the quality is worth it."

Summary | Enjoy the same "usual sound" anywhere with FRFR

Summary of this time

  • Benefit
You can use the sound you've created as is.
It is possible to unify the stage sound and the sound from the PA during a live performance.
A single unit can handle a wide variety of amp sounds, leading to simplified and lightweight equipment.
  • How to choose
Consider the balance between output and size. If portability is important, choose a small and lightweight model, and if loud volume and low end are important, choose a large model. Choose the shape based on your preference, whether monitor type or cabinet type. In terms of functionality, check the input/output terminals and additional functions.

As digital equipment evolves, FRFR speakers are also improving year by year.
